I’ve thought about what I would say on Monday wh $I’ve thought about what I would say on Monday when I was no longer “muting” myself to amplify Black voices. ⠀ ⠀ The truth is that being quiet last week- listening, learning, amplifying other voices- was incredibly illuminating. ⠀ ⠀ ➤ I read books that opened my eyes to the history of institutionalized racism.⠀ ⠀ ➤ I listened to Black men and women express their pain and outrage.⠀ ⠀ ➤ I learned the ways my status as a “model minority” and inability to recognize privilege have contributed to the problem. ⠀ ⠀ ➤ I was called in and had to learn to put my ego aside to separate the message from my feelings. ⠀ ⠀ I quietly watched multiple dramas unfold in my online world- watched as trust and respect were lost, friendships fractured, optical allyship in action, obfuscations and virtue signaling take over dialogue. ⠀ ⠀ I also reflected on what truly holds value in my life when I’m not broadcasting that life out to the world. ⠀ ⠀ ✨The work doesn’t end here. The change in our lives comes when the change comes in our heart. ⠀ ⠀ 🌱 Now is the time to actually DO the work- not just read/collect/share the books + resources.⠀ ⠀ 🌱 Now is the time to go back to work AND be an ally- this not an either/or situation.⠀ ⠀ 🌱 Now is the time to show up imperfectly, be willing to be corrected and to continue moving forward.⠀ ⠀ 🌱 Now is the time to put down our phones and actually implement the changes we’re all writing about on social media. ⠀ ⠀ I’m committed to working towards this. I am raising the next generation of children for whom an understanding of racism and dismantling it will be a nonnegotiable.✨⠀ ⠀ Nothing changes until I change myself.
